Among humanity there are so many different varieties of people that we need a variety of approaches to achieve the same goal. That goal is compassionate humanity and compassionate human society. That's what I believe, and that's my message. This little book commemorating His Holiness the Dalai Lama's visit to the town of Woodstock, New York, on the United Nations International Day of Peace, September 21, 2006, will serve as a reminder to the people of Woodstock, and their friends and neighbors, about the importance of the universal values of love, compassion, and warm heartedness.

His Holiness The 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, is both the head of state and the spiritual leader of Tibet. The Dalai Lamas are believed to be manifestations of Chenrezik, the Bodhisattva of Compassion and patron saint of Tibet. In 1989 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his nonviolent struggle for the liberation of Tibet. He has consistently advocated policies of non-violence, even in the face of extreme aggression. His Holiness has traveled to more than sixty-two countries spanning six continents. He has met with presidents, prime ministers, and crowned rulers of major nations. He has held dialogues with the heads of different religions and many well-known scientists. Since 1959 His Holiness has received over eighty-four awards, honorary doctorates, and prizes, in recognition of his message of peace, nonviolence, interreligious understanding, universal responsibility, and compassion. His Holiness has also authored more than seventy-two books. His Holiness describes himself as a simple Buddhist monk.
