The faraway country of Bhutan is also known as the Land of the Thunder Dragon. This small Himalayan Kingdom is, in the eyes of many, the embodiment of the last Shangri-La, a final refuge for the mystical wisdom of Buddhism and a paragon of spiritual happiness.

The origin of the name of Bhutan is contentious even today. It might be that its name derives from the Sanskrit word bhu-uttan meaning ""high lands"". The Bhutanese, however, call their country Druk Yul, ""The Land of the Thunder Dragon"" and themselves - drukpa. The national faith is a branch of the Tantric form of Mahayana Buddhism - Drukpa Kagyu. If we were to review the history of Bhutan, we would discover this country to be a land of legends. The name Druk Yul is related to legend. At the end of the 12th century, a prominent lama was in the act of sanctifying a monastery in Middle Tibet when a crack of thunder was heard. Thunder was, according to folk belief, the voice of a dragon (druk). The lama, bearing this in mind, named the monastery Druk and the teaching he founded was thus named Drukpa.
